Where did YOU come from!?

Uh oh. It seems our hero’s recent activities have run a foul of a couple of really powerful people. And what happens when powerful people get scared that they might lose their power? Well, they seek to eliminate the source of their problems.

So here we are. Enigma is in a standoff with a deadly assassin. Lucky for him, the fool chose to forego stealth and charge him head on.

“You’re very lucky that I’m your target. A lesser wolf would have killed you.”

Another wonderful commission from Buffpup back in June of 2018. I liked both her style and the pirate YCH so much that I had to hire her again for another commission.

Since it’s a question I still get asked semi-frequently when people go back to see this piece, the spell Enigma is casting is a sleeping spell, meant to knock out his aggressor before he can strike. I remember that the original sketch had a fireball in the spell’s place, but I asked Buffpup to make it a transparent blue flame so I could plausible sell that this spell was within Enigma’s power set, which she was happy to do for me.

This was also probably the first time Enigma was depicted with a muscular, but very lithe and athletic build, in large part due to the artist’s style. It remains my preferred build for the character, both because it’s oppose to my own more heavyset build in real life, but also in contrast to Jace from Magic: The Gathering, who until Ixalan was often described as using his illusion magic to obfuscate the fact that he was small, slender, and perpetually tired.

If you follow me on Twitch and/or YouTube, you might recognize this as the icon I use on both sites. Additionally, it’s one that I go back to frequently when I’m writing Enigma on something more adventurous, because it captures that side of him so perfectly.
