What’s Happening To Me!?

“It’s not just my body, that other presence is still inside me. I need to know

what it is, and what it’s doing.”

This is a scene right after Enigma returned to his home plane after first being infected with the symbiote and regaining control of himself. As a scholar and researcher, the first place his mind goes is to trying to understand what this foreign entity is, what it’s doing to him, and whether or not it’s dangerous.

As you can see, the fact that this is all unknown makes him very, very nervous. Especially when he doesn’t fully control what’s going on in his own body.

This piece was commissioned from Novaloux, who also goes by LittleFreckles, back in December of 2018.

Once Enigma defeated the symbiote won control over his mind and body by fighting off its influence, the idea was that he would immediately planeswalk back to his home and try to figure out what happened to him through scientific research. Understandably, sentient goo invading and covering him caused some stress, hence the expression.

Enigma is a scholar as well as an adventurer, so when something like this happens his first instinct is to try to understand it, so that he make an informed choice. And in understanding what he was infected with, he ultimately decides that it’s not inherently dangerous and can be used as a force for good.

When I pitched the concept to the artist, they were the ones who proposed using a lab coat, and I agreed that it worked in the context of the piece. Although in retrospect it probably took something away from how easily identifiable Enigma is on first glance, since his typical color palette is no where in sight. I probably should have requested to add some blue adornments to the outfit. That said, I am still happy with the final product. It sells the scene as I wished it to.
