Traversing the Blind Eternities
In the space between planes, known poetically as The Blind Eternities, lies a vast ocean of energy, from which all souls are born and to which they return. At yet, some are born with an excess of this energy, aether. Experts call this excess the Planeswalker’s Spark.
In most who have it, it lies dormant, “igniting” when exposed to a catalyst, some internal, external, or emotional force that activates the potential and turns that person into a true Planeswalker. Those who awaken to their sparks receive several boons, including access to deep reserves of mana and aether most ordinary mages could only dream of and increased affinity for spellcasting.
But the greatest of them all, from which Planeswalkers derive their title, is the ability to traverse the Blind Eternities safely, crossing the boundaries to explore worlds not their own. Their spark confers not only the power to push through the boundaries separately planes but protection against the vast quantities of aether that inhabit this in-between.
In an era before Enigma was born, Planeswalkers once had the powers beyond gods, able to craft entire worlds with little more than a thought, survive any and all lethal wounds, and change their form at will. No longer do they enjoy these benefits, but even still this now-mortal breed of Planeswalker possesses abilities beyond the ordinary. And it is up to each to decide how best to use their gifts.
Like many of his peers, Enigma is possessed of curiosity and wanderlust. Though he always returns to tell his students, friends, and co-workers the tales of his adventures, and the lessons learned from them, it is never long before he inevitably feels the call in his heart to continue exploring the cosmos. When the whole multiverse is at one’s fingertips, who could possibly resist the siren call to see what else might be out there?
Though this piece from LittleBadWolf in January of 2022 technically depicts Perfect Bond Enigma, and thus should belong in the Symbiote Timeline, the written component is agnostic to whichever form of Enigma we’re discussing, so I have chosen to place it under Concepting instead.
For most of my Magic players audience, most of this is information you would already be familiar with. However, not everyone who reads my work knows what a Planeswalker is, and thus it is important that those people understand the raw concept and how it might apply to Enigma.
