“This is My Full Power”
Drawn by Seiryuuden in October in 2018, this is the “official” unveiling of Symbiote Enigma’s “Perfect Bond” form, which I had dubbed “Combat Mode” at the time.
As I said with Lex Farran’s piece, this was what happened when Enigma and his symbiote, Companion, merged both of their minds together into one. The union, needing magic to sustain itself, doesn’t last. Once completely exhausted, the two will be forced to separate again. But while it in this form, Enigma can craft weapons and tools on-demand, using malleable symbiote matter as raw material and sculpting it with the skill that comes from his expertise in conjuring accurate illusions.
A process you see happened in this shot, as the black matter in his hand takes shape, magic runes forming it into a sword that looks much like any other. It would be as sharp as Enigma wished it to be. And mind magic would seep into the wounds inflicted by it, gradually allowing him to control and influence those who fight him.
I confess that I still adore the concept now, even after making it non-canon. It was simply a case of “killing your darlings”, and not getting precious about elements of the story. The cold truth is that there simply wasn’t a place for a symbiote in the direction I ultimately took Enigma and the rest of my work after a certain point.
It’s unfortunate, but I’m happy with where I went. This was just not compatible with that.
