The Unofficial Spymaster

Though the Magistrum possesses technology advanced enough to send messages through handheld communicators, not all of the city-states of Crossroads, nor all of their citizens, have access to said technology. And even when they do, some simply prefer the old way of carrier birds, for their discretion if nothing else. Not everyone wants their chat history saved on a comm device.

And as a master of subterfuge and discretion, Enigma makes use of this facility often, to keep in touch with his contacts across the plane who value their privacy. In a manner of speaking, he is often thought of as the school’s unofficial spymaster for his ability to keep tabs on the affairs of the other city-states, even ones who haven’t signed an accord with the Magistrum.

And yet another one-off YCH from LittleBadWolf, this time in September of 2023.

Something I’ve always found strange is the way that magical, fantasy settings often stagnant technologically. I imagine technology would develop differently in a world where magic was more commonplace, but I can’t imagine it would refuse to advance at all. (Skyrim in particular annoys me with this.)

I wanted to avoid that pitfall with Crossroads, which is why art commissioned by me often blends modern and fantasy aesthetics. It also contributes to Enigma’s knack for blending into whatever setting he lands in, since his world is a pastiche of so many others by design.
