The “Humble” Beginnings
E: “Even now, despite piecing it all together, I find it difficult to believe you had no hesitation when you became the first sapient test subject for your titan elixir.”
V: “I was desperate, detective. Alchemy was my only skill and area of interest. Even after leaving Oplentis, it was hard for me to make friends. I had built up too many walls. Your therapists could only do so much.”
E: “And so you decided to delve into the one thing that you were passionate about, hoping it would give you a solution.”
V: “Yes. At the end of the day, it did.”
E: “No regrets?”
V: “Plenty of them, detective. But making that potion, using it, isn’t one of them.”
– Excerpt from an interview between Rabrandt “Enigma” Cyanis and Volpes of Oplentis, several months into the latter’s rehabilitation.
Drawn by Nightarm back in November of 2023, and posted back in March of 2024, this piece was an YCH that depicted an anthro character growing as a result of a potion. It was perfect for Volpes, since that was part of his backstory.
And writing-wise, this was a bit of an experiment for me. I had so much art of Volpes from before his rehabilitation, but since I was about to start focusing on his new path going forward, it had less sense to focus on that part of his life. As a compromise, I decided to use this interview style as a way to have Volpes reflect on his old life, questioned about it by Enigma.
I’m quite happy with the format, and I expect as I continue to commission art of old Volpes, I will make more use of it.
