Parks and Certification
This lovely piece from LittleBadWolf was the perfect excuse to return to everyone’s favorite young couple, Edmund and Mortimer.
“Thought I’d find ya here.” In The Greens, a sizeable wooded nature preserve and recreation area with Magistrum City, a shirtless musclebound tigerkin, Edmund, uses his command of the winds to gracefully land next to a rabbitkin enough his young age.
The hare, his boyfriend Mortimer, more modestly dressed, lays atop a blanket to protect himself from grass stains, reading a book to pass time. With his ears perked, he turns his head, “How’d it go? I thought you’d be another hour, Ed.”
“Old man keeps forgettin’ I can fly. Didn’t think it would be as easy to carry that scrap around his workshop as it was.” As if to sell the point, Edmund flashed Mortimer a flex of his powerful arms and back, eliciting a grin and a chuckle from his little bunbun.
“I still can’t believe a wild cat like your dad is a gearhead. Guess I’m not the only one full of surprises.”
Edmund shrugged his shoulders. “He didn’t either unt-“, as his mind fully finished processing the statement, the big tig gave his partner a puzzled look. “Whaddya mean ‘You’re not the only one’?”
Reaching into his bag, Mortimer pulled out a card and handed it over. “I did it, Ed. I did it!”
“Holy shit, Mort”, from the design alone, Edmund recognized the official Magistrum City Self-Defense Certification. He himself had one just like it: Proof of martial proficiency. “All that practice ya been puttin’ in paid off. Got any plans now that you can leave the city on yer own?”
“Just knowing I don’t need to bug you to go out anymore is enough for me, since you’re so busy.”
Handing the card back to Mortimer, Edmund started to sit down on the grass. Before he could stain his pants, his boyfriend scooched over to make room on the blanket. Taking the wordlessly-granted permission, the tigerkin sat down, pulling an arm around the hare. “I always got time for ya, man.”
“I know you do, Ed”, he returned the gesture by snuggle wrapping him arm around Edmund’s waist and snuggling him. “But I think I needed this, you know what I mean?”
“I do, Mort”, he snuggled the rabbitkin back. “I do.”
They say in silence together, for an all too brief moment, before a terrible thought crossed Mortimer’s mind. He could feel his heart sink as he looked to his partner. “I was so excited about the cert that forgot to finish writing the next part of our campaign.”
“Morty… the next meet is tonight. How much do you have done?”
“I’m having trouble figuring out a good encounter for Refugue the Cinderlich. I think once I figure that out, the rest of it will fall into place.”
Edmund let out a laugh. “Then let’s get home. We have a few hours to brainstorm before everyone else shows up.”
