Kingmaker, Kingbreaker
“You look at this throne, and you see a monument to all the power and influence you’ve built on the backs of the people you mistreated. This gilded trim and gaudy cup. I look at this and see naught but an expensive chair that anyone is free to use as they see fit: like so.”
While on his travels, our favorite wolf mind mage came across a town rife with corruption and abuse, going all the way to their top elected officials. Someone of Enigma’s character isn’t one to simply let the status quo stand if common folk are suffering at the behest of those in power, and so he naturally took it upon himself to dethrone these corrupt officials and pass power over to the people.
It took some doing, but before long those top officials were exposed for their crimes and led out in chains. Obviously, a wandering mage isn’t fit to take over, but the rogue psionicist seems confident that the one who does will be much more amendable to the will of the populace.
How did he manage such a feat? Well, a good magician never reveals his secrets. As for the throne, Enigma can be petty when it comes to those who abuse others with their authority, so you’ll have to forgive him for his sitting stunt. The chair wasn’t that comfortable anyway.
Another piece from LittleBadWolf, released back in July of 2020.
The intent was to sell that Enigma was both the kind of person who wouldn’t be afraid to intervene at the sight of injustice, similar to his apprentice Edmund, but not directly. Instead, he would manipulate the situation behind the scenes in order to achieve his desired outcome.
Four years removed from this piece, I have a more complicated perspective on it now than I did back then. Primarily due to having a greater understanding on US Interventionism and its profoundly negative impacts on countries across the world. Given the kind of character Enigma is, and what his talents are suited for, I’m not sure I will ever be able to threat the needle in a way that leaves me fully comfortable. Having said that, I don’t think that necessarily a bad thing. It can make for interesting discussions and potential story hooks as I continue to write the character.
