Just one moment of inattention can change your life forever.
“I was nervous coming here, but it looks like I brought out the sword and board for nothing…”
According to the locals, people have disappearing in the vicinity of a desolate, abandoned castle, once home to a fallen lineage. While there have been strange happenings in the area for years now, there have been sightings on mysterious, black creatures in the area.
Never one to shy away for a intriguing puzzle, Enigma decided to take up the case. Sword and shield in hand, Enigma has emerged victorious against one of these monsters. But perhaps that one moment of inattention could spell doom for our hero.
“This feels incredible! Such power, such knowledge! There’s no end to what we could accomplish!”
While Enigma was busy surveying the area, the symbiote took it’s chance. Separating part of itself from the whole, it latched on to its new host. Though he put up as much resistance as he could, Enigma was no match for such an opponent.
Now bonded to the alien creature, Enigma is stronger than he has ever been before. With their combined power and knowledge, will the new creature be a force for good, or will Enigma be forever lost?
This commission comes courtesy of an artist named Croft, from July of 2018. Those who know me well know that ever since I was a child, I’ve had a fondness for Venom and what would later be known as the Klyntar Symbiotes. When I heard that the artist was offering commissions to have one’s character “Venomized”, I was eager to jump in line for it.
At the time I wrote the text descriptions for these pieces, I was not sure whether or not to make this canon. Eventually, I convinced myself that it was both necessary and worthwhile to tie in every piece I commissioned into the overarching lore and story line for Enigma.
With the benefit of hindsight, I am able to see that no need to incorporate this into mainline continuity. The central lore I’ve developed in the time since is strong enough to stand on its own, and I feel that Enigma as a character is more interesting without throwing in a whole symbiote, complete with its own personality. Additionally, I’ve grown to realize that as much as I adore Venom and symbiotes, writing in this whole other character than exists purely in Enigma’s head just isn’t worth the trouble. So if you’re reading this as of the time of publication, and it feels like the symbiote side to Enigma has fallen off the wagon: There’s a reason for that.
Fun fact: The original idea has the symbol on his chest being the loop emblem on the piece of cloth covering his faulds, but due to my miscommunication the artist used the symbols on the tunic and shifted with to the chest. I ultimately chose not to correct him because I liked the concept after seeing it.
