I’ll Protect You!

“Stand back. I’ll keep you safe!”

Things might be getting a bit too hot for our planeswalking hero. But Enigma won’t hesitate to throw himself into the fire to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
Of course, it helps to be able to counter fire magic with spells of your own.

This piece was drawn in April of 2018 by Andrea Radeck aka Firefeathers, an artist who has done work on some obscure indie game called Magic: The Gathering.

It was a pure serendipity that led to this commission. At the time, the artist was getting typecast as someone who draws “cutesy” art. In order to pad out her portfolio, she opened up a waitlist for slightly discounted “epic” scenes that better display her skill at conveying more dynamic compositions. My proposal was accepted and soon after this is what came out of it.

If there was any doubt that Andrea Radeck could do “epic”, let this piece silence it. To this day, I am mesmerized by the way the flames from the pyromancer’s fire blast wrap around the barrier as if they’re being parted, and how the woman and her child aren’t as illuminated because they aren’t in the direct path of the flames.
