Enigma, Seeker of Truth
With the piece of art from GrandTaurus in the previous post came my first foray into crafting custom Magic: the Gathering cards, which would grow to be a running theme for much of my art going forward.
Fun fact: I’m 90% sure “Seeker of Truth” is a reference to Persona 4, but I can’t be absolutely certain since it’s been almost 7 years at the time of writing since I made this card.
And as a card, it is very… “first attempt” at making a Planeswalker. In short, it’s not very good or compelling, even if you ignore the clear mistakes in wording and templating of the card’s effects.
That said, I don’t regret making this card. It was the starting point for diving into the space of custom cards. Sure, this particular card wasn’t great, but I learned much from it, especially from feedback regarding it.
For example, I wouldn’t have such a verbose ability on a Planeswalker if I was designing one today, let alone one that both doesn’t actually net any meaningful card advantage nor any synergy whatsoever with what either of the other abilities are doing. Planeswalkers in the modern era tend to have far more internalized synergy, leading to more coherent designs.
And the Ultimate is simply not worth the effort required to obtain it. I was a novice player back in these days, and I understood that I liked drawing cards, but some of the finer nuances of gameplay and design still eluded me.
Perhaps one day I’ll revisit this concept with a fresh set of eyes, but not anytime soon.
