Enigma, Intrepid Explorer // Enigma, Newly Reborn

This custom card was pieced together through the art commissioned from Croft, again back in June of 2018. Though a more powerful card than my previous attempts to make a Planeswalker, I too find that this one, with the benefit of hindsight, is less interesting or exciting than it could have been.

At the time, War of the Spark had not yet been released, and I was not aware of Garruk Relentless. Therefore, it never occurred to me that a Planeswalker card could have a transformation trigger as a passive ability. The only transforming Planeswalker I knew about was Arlinn Kord, whose ability causes her to transform. (The Magic Origins flip walkers don’t count because they’re creatures on the front.)

Had I known then what I do now, I probably would have the transformation some kind of trigger, likely when something that satisfied a particular condition died. And again, as I’ve said multiple times now for these cards, I would make more built in synergies between each ability, rather than put a ton of powerful sounding, yet completely unrelated abilities onto the same card.

But one must learn to walk before they can run, and each of these experiments brought me closer and closer to the kinds of designs I want to bring to the world.
