Enigma, Adept Investigator

Another attempt to turn commissioned art into an MTG card.

This was around the time I started realizing that the skill set I had given Enigma, when combined with the profession I had chosen for him, would necessarily involve incorporating Black into his color identity. And yet, I wasn’t quite comfortable designing three color cards. Therefore, instead I chose to make Blue the center point of his powers and personality, pivoting towards Black and White as the card demanded.

As far as designs go, I think this one is still a sloppy design from my early days, but it’s closer to something with a coherent vision behind it than the first one. I can at least see the beginnings of what could be refined into a more interesting card.

Combined with the art, this piece, flawed as it was, helped me interrogate my own preconceptions on the character I had built.
