Double Trouble
“My my. You look like a person starring down two angry mind mages. What a precarious position.”
Whatever enemy our hero sees in front off him is about to be in for a rude awakening. He’s angered Enigma to the point where he feels compelled to use one of his more creative powers. What are you seeing is a spell that generates an exact duplicate of whatever he wants to replicate: In this case, himself.
The clone is merely a phantom: An illusion. However, the spell powering its existence makes its victim believe any damage inflicted upon them in real.
Enigma has also been known to link his symbiote’s mind to illusions that he summons, allowing it to pilot them as if they were its own body.
Another incredible piece from DanSyron, created back in April of 2019. And much like this previous work, it would go on to become one of the images that most strongly defined Enigma as a character. I still this as my avatar on social media at the time of writing.
And as you can see, I was still wedded to the idea of the symbiote being canon at this point, otherwise I wouldn’t have added that throwaway line about Enigma allowing his symbiote partner pilot the illusion.
Like many of the biggest commissions from this time in my history, the card this art was to be used for was designed before I ever reached out to the artist to propose a commission. It’s nothing special in the context of modern Magic: The Gathering, but it makes me smile to think about it.
