Azurium, the Kingpin’s First

Since Azurium was going to become such a key character in the story, it was only natural that I design a custom card for him, especially since the piece from LittleBadWolf illustrated him so beautifully.

The challenge I laid upon myself was to design a card that fit in as a support card for Volpes, while still being a strong concept that could be built around as a commander. With Azurium on the board, Volpes can use his ability even on creatures protected by hexproof or shroud. And if the ability somehow fizzles, at least the creature is goaded.

And yet, especially these days, there is plenty of support in Red and Blue for a political control/goad strategy. Azurium would fit at the helm of that deck, or in the 99 of it, offering protection to the goaded creature so that they’re even more likely to attack successfully. (And as another fun flavor win, the targeting aspect of it also supports committing crimes.)

I could probably redesign and retemplate the effect to modernize it, but I’m still happy with the overall design.
