And the Title Goes To!

Though fight rings exist in both Oplentis and Magistrum City, both of them serve fundamentally different purposes.

Back in Oplentis, the rings Edmund participated in were mostly excuses for nobility to throw money at commoners to fight for their amusement. There was room for someone to grow and develop in the scene, but that was secondary to the true purpose of giving the wealthy and powerful a night of illegal entertainment, watching the lower class debase themselves for an easy payout.

By contrast, the combat sports scene in Magistrum City is closely supervised by the Magistrum’s College of Martial Arts. Students who seek to go beyond the Self Defense Training required to leave the city without an escort will often finding themselves competing against their peers, and warriors from other cities or planes, in sanctioned events designed to further test and hone their skills.

Edmund may be pledged to Enigma’s mentorship in the College of Magical Sciences, but cross-training among the various colleges is encouraged by Magistrum leadership to foster a well-rounded student body. As a student of the school, he has a right to compete like any other. Between his regular training, titan enhancements, and the experience of street fighting as “Azure Lighting”, he’s managed to win his fair of matches despite the magic-nullifying properties of the arena.

And now, he walks away with this year’s championship belt, to the cheers of his peers and schoolmates. The College of Martial Arts might not be happy, since the winner of their event wasn’t one of their own hopefuls, but they’ll get over it.

For their students, it’s just an excuse to push themselves further and further.
