A Working Fox
It is safe to say that Volpes is a complicated man, with a complicated relationship with those under his employ. On some level, he has empathy for them, refusing to order them to do any task that he himself would be unwilling to do with his own two hands. As his titans work to fulfill their obligations to the local farmers and provisioners that keep his forces supplied, you will often find him tilling the fields or raising crops right alongside them. He has never forgotten his commoner roots, as they remain at the core of what drives him in his war against the nobility and aristocracy of Oplentis.
Yet, it is still undeniably his war against the aristocracy. There are many who chose, willingly, to follow him into this war, for myriad reasons, but they are not the ones who give orders or call shots: Their mental conditioning doesn’t allow for it. To these people who became titans and work for him, he is the one in charge. And though he would never admit it, least of all to himself, there’s a part of him deep down that enjoys the authority. It’s a power that he never had as a younger foxkin.
Volpes is both their equal and their superior… their boss. Perhaps not even he fully understands the paradox and duality that exists at the heart of that relationship, one that colors his every thought and action.
This piece was a YCH from balalaevGod back in September of 2022. Volpes is, in many ways, similar to a mafia crime boss, leading a syndicate that offers protection to people who operate outside the law. And this piece reflects that in that way he carries himself, even if this outfit isn’t exactly canon.
He may be a man of the people, but his undeniably the one in charge.
