For the Common Good
Story written by CyberLighting and Transcribed below:
It was a long walk and there was still no sign of this camp. Richard and Enigma had been on the search for hours and there was still no luck. The sun was getting lower and it would only be a matter of time before it would be too dark to see anything.
“Where did you say those bandits were headed?” Richard asked.
“I was told they were heading north,” replied Enigma.
“That makes no sense. That Kingdom banned slavery years ago why would they head that way?”
“Black market? Selling them on to other kingdoms?”
Richard went quiet. It made sense but that was if there was one. But it was still to risky for the bandits to head that way. There was nothing to gain. The risk was just too…
“Hold on”, said Enigma suddenly, “This map said that there is an abandoned mine that way. Could they be taking shelter in there?”
Mine shaft. The mine shaft. Richard slapped his hand over his eyes. “The mine shaft! I completely forgot! There are multiple entrances to it. One that leads into Nestor’s Kingdom, where they still have slavery.”
“That’s where they’re heading then. Come on. Follow me. This path will take us near”
They ran down the path for a good hour towards the mine but then doubt emerged. They’d been running too long. They should have come across the mine by now. Enigma pulled out his map again to get his bearings only to find they where exactly where they should be.
Richard leapt onto a nearby rock and pulled out his telescope. Maybe there was something. Hidden in all of these trees and mountains that there was a camp or something. He looked around and then he saw it.
“Over there,” Richard said pointing. “I see a small fire at the entrance and two guards. Their clothes match the description.”
“Brilliant. Let’s go. We don’t have anytime to waste,” Enigma replied. The two of them ran towards the bandits. No one was going to be sold a slave tonight.
This piece, commissioned from Ada_Oz back in, was commissioned just before Covid-19 officially arrived on US shores in February of 2020. It was a token of friendship, split between myself and my friend CyberLightning, who wrote the piece above.
As I flesh out my world, lore, and story, he’s been a great soundboard to bounce ideas off of, and it would be fair to say that I own a good portion of my creative output to his continued feedback. Reading others attempt to write in your character’s voice is a great way to help cement what their voice “should” sound like.
